Contemporary Poetry Reading Group: Come to the First Meeting!

October 10, 2012 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Poetry Colloquium is organizing a contemporary poetry reading group whose first meeting is this week:
Wednesday, 10th October 7.00 – 8.30pm in the Hinds Library (McCosh Basement B12) Wine will be provided.
For the first session we will be looking at J.H. Prynne’s short book _Wound Response_ (1974), a difficult and peculiarly beautiful text which should reward group discussion.

Anyone interested can email osxr@princeton.edu for a scan of the book.

We will read the text aloud during the session (or at least try to), so no advance preparation or prior knowledge of the poet’s work is necessary. We will also discuss which poets to read in future sessions.
J.H. Prynne (born UK, 1936) has published more than thirty books of poems over the last fifty years, which must count among the most challenging poetry written in English. His youthful association with Charles Olson, close friendship with Ed Dorn, and criticism of Language Poetry give his work particular relevance to American poetry.
Prynne is a reader emeritus at the University of Cambridge, life fellow of Gonville and Caius College, honorary professor at the University of Sussex, and Guest Professor at Sun Yat-sen University, China. The third edition of his collected Poems was published in 2005, and his Selected Poems translated into Chinese in 2010. He has published book-length commentaries on single poems by Wordsworth, Shakespeare and Herbert.
