A Dialogue on Chinese and English Poetics

Monday, March 27:
9 a.m.—coffee and fruit—Prospect Library
Welcome and brief presentation of research interests by everyone
3-5- -translation discussion and experiments
Wednesday, March 29: focus on periodization/canonization in English and Chinese traditions
9:30-11:30 Prospect Library— coffee and fruit discussion—Pound’s Cathay; the May 4 (1919) movement in Chinese Modernism
2-4 further discussion—poets’ poets in English tradition [Bishop and Herbert/Stevens and Keats/ Brooks and Pope, for example] the continuity and break with earlier forms in modern and contemporary Chinese poetry
Friday, March 31:
9:30-11:30 Prospect Library—discussion and further translation exercises
working with time and cultural frames
